Digimarc: Patents & profitsby Jim Oberweis, Jr., editor The Oberweis Report One of our current recommendations is Digimarc Corp. (DMRC), which provides technologies that create digital identities for all forms of media and many objects. These embedded digital IDs may be imperceptible to humans, but allow computers, networks and mobile devices, using their microphones and/or cameras as sensory inputs, to “see, hear and understand” their surroundings. Digimarc’s business model is to develop technological solutions, patent them, and license their intellectual property, in addition to providing development services to business partners across a range of industries. Digimarc has a long history of providing the technology to governments to deter the counterfeiting of money, and the advent of smartphones and other mobile devices is driving significant interest for other applications. The company’s technology allows an individual with a smartphone, for example, to snap a photo of a wine bottle or an outdoor advertisement and immediately get further information and online pricing and availability for that particular item on their mobile device. Digimarc maintains an extensive intellectual property (IP) portfolio comprised of more than 600 issued US and foreign patents and more than 400 pending. In the company’s latest reported second quarter, sales increased approximately 81% to $9.5 million from $5.2 million in the second quarter of last year. Digimarc reported earnings per share of $.24 (excluding a tax benefit in the quarter) in the latest reported second quarter versus a loss in the same quarter of last year. Clients of Oberweis Asset Management own approximately 134,000 shares. These shares may be appropriate for risk oriented investors.
