by Leo Fasciocco, editor Ticker Tape DigestFresh Markets ( TFM), based in Greensboro, N.C., operates 113 food markets in 19 states; its annual revenues are $1.1 billion; following strong earnings, the stock has broken out to the upside.
Fresh Markets reported net for the fiscal first quarter ended April 30 jumped to 40 cents a share from 28 cents a year ago. The consensus estimate on the Street was at 35 cents a share and the highest was at 38 cents a share. So, TFM topped the highest estimate, which is very bullish. That probably will cause analysts to raise their year estimates. Net for the upcoming fiscal second quarter ending July 30 should rise 19% to 26 cents a share from 22 cents a year ago. The highest estimate on the Street is at 27 cents a share. The stock coming public in late 2010 and trading around 35. The stock then climbed to a peak of 48 in early 2011. It then pulled back to 31 in mid-2011. Since then it has been working steadily higher. The breakout is impressive coming with expanding volume and a widening of the trading spread. Also, the base was set up above a rising 50-day moving average line. So, the breakout has a lot of positives, with strong underlying buying supporting the breakout. Institutional sponsorship is excellent. The largest fund holder is 5-star rated Fidelity Growth Company Fund with a 4.9% stake. Also, 5-star rated Wells Fargo Advantage Growth Fund is the second largest fund holder with a 4.2% stake. The largest fund buyer recently was 4-star rated Lord Abbett Developing Growth Fund which bought 509,117 shares.
