by Konrad Kuhn, editor The Kon-Lin Letter.Aastrom Biosciences ( ASTM) is an emerging biotech company focused on the development of innovative cell therapies to repair or regenerate damaged or diseases tissues.
Its cell-processing technology enables the manufacture of ixmyelocel-T, a patient-specific therapy expanded from a patient's own bone marrow and delivered directly to damaged tissues. The technology requires a small quantity of bone marrow stem stems to be taken from the patient's hip. In about 12 days, ASTM's proprietary system expands the naturally-occurring cell populations found in the extracted bone marrow. These cells are known to play key roles in tissue regeneration. Ixmyelocel-T has the potential to be a promising treatment in patient with Critical limb ischemia (CLI)., which is the most serious and advanced stage of peripheral arterial disease; this often leads to amputation and death. Nearly 200 patients have been treated in recent clinical trials. ASTM recently released positive Phase-2b data confirming no major safety issues. Aastrom obtained FDA approval of a Special Protocol Assessment and fast track status for their Phase 3 CLI program; the pivotal Phase 3 Revive CLI trial was launched in February. The company is also on the verge of a randomized, double-blinded Phase 2b trial in treating dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)- a chronic deases that leads to the enlargement if the heart. DCM is thethird most common cause of heart failure and the most frequent cause of heart transplantation. Aastrom's activities, including a recent successful financing, put the company in a much stronger position to expedite its important clinical programs and move ixmyelocel-T closer to commericalization. Our first target is a move to the $5-$6 level; our ultimate target is $9-$10. Learn more about this financial newsletter at Konrad Kuhn's The Kon-Lin Letter.Related articles:

If you’ve been worried that the bond market might take a big hit, you can relax. Indeed, while bond funds may lag stock funds over the next 5-10 years, they still have a decent shot at keeping up with inflation, and they remain an excellent way to cut risk in a blended portfolio.

With the death of Hugo Chavez in March, and Venezuela’s economic decline, the heavily subsidized oil lifeline is likely to be cut or sharply reduced. I think the resulting energy squeeze will force Cuba to allow greater foreign trade and investment.

In October 2011, we questioned the run-up in gold prices to $1,895 an ounce and called prices “bubblish”. We were criticized for not understanding the new paradigm.
