by Bernie Schaeffer, editor Schaeffer's Investment ResearchBased on our strategy of assessing technical, fundamental and sentiment-based metrics, I initiated a long position in 3-D Systems ( DDD); the stock has been a technical standout.
The shares have posted a year-to-date gain of 17% and a year-over-year gain of 211 percent. The equity is trending well above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and thus indicates it is in a long-term update. Short interest, as a percentage of the stock's float, is over 23 percent. Any additional strength could lead to a short-covering rally. Additionally, the Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR), which measures open interest for the front three months of an optionable equity, currently stands at 1.12. This ratio indicates a bias of puts versus calls and is in the 80th percentile of all SOIR ratios in the past 52 weeks. An unwinding of these bearish bets could act as a tailwind toward the equity. Finally, there are only 6 analysts covering the equity (4 buys, 2 holds). This creates the potential for more analysts to cover the equity and/or initiate a series of upgrades, which could also help to drive the shares higher. Fidelity expert: Bowers' bond bets |
by Jack Bowers, editor Fidelity Monitor & Insight
If you’ve been worried that the bond market might take a big hit, you can relax. Indeed, while bond funds may lag stock funds over the next 5-10 years, they still have a decent shot at keeping up with inflation, and they remain an excellent way to cut risk in a blended portfolio.
