Michael Shulman uses simple trading tactics to make solid, profitable investments in falling stocks in his Short-Side Trader service.

Two core sets of data drive his "short-side" recommendations -- macro data from ChangeWave Research and other sources and segment and micro data.

Michael ShulmanSome of this micro information also comes from ChangeWave Research, as well as information found in financial and other reports, like proprietary databases and analyst reports.

The ChangeWave Research staff conducts more than 50 surveys each year that look at the general economy and specific market segments, as well as narrower market segments and/or individual companies. He works closely with the staff to ferret out the truth weeks and months before Wall Street becomes aware of emerging trends.

From this data, stock picks are made. Once the biggest losers are identified, Michael picks the put options with the right combination of reasonable cost (anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars per share), ones that provide enough time for the position to work and stand to double (and even triple) his readers' money.

Michael began his career doing in-depth company and market analysis for a variety of companies, building databases and simulation models to estimate the success of various technologies across a wide range of market segments.

He moved "inside" the high-tech community as a manager at high-tech companies including AT&T. Michael was an early private investor in several Internet start-ups, notably XOOM.com, which went public in 1998 and was bought by NBC in 1999.

Michael currently sits on the Executive Board of NextGen Capital, a venture fund based in Fairfax, Va., Chairman and Board member of Primewire and sits on the Advisory Boards of Sandbox.com and Brainbench.

He has been published in a variety of trade and general business publications, including CD-ROM Today, Worth Online, The Motley Fool, Bonjour Paris and the Los Angeles Times and is a frequent guest on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

Prior to joining InvestorPlace Media, Michael was the CEO of AtYourBusiness.com, now Primewire, a benefits administration Application Service Provider he founded in 1998.

Michael began work for InvestorPlace Media by performing independent research and financial analysis for several of its publications. Prior to taking on his current role as Editor of Short-Side Trader, he served as Editor of ChangeWave Hedge Fund Investing and ChangeWave Biotech Investor.

He also served as Managing Director of Research for ChangeWave Research for four years where he has produced technology and health care research for financial institutions.
